But an angel of the Lord said to Philip, Rise and proceed southward or at midday on the road that runs from Jerusalem down to Gaza. This is the desert [route]. So he got up and went. And behold, an Ethiopian, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all
her treasure, had come to Jerusalem to worship. And he was [now] returning, and sitting in his chariot he was
reading the book of the prophet Isaiah. Then the [Holy] Spirit said to Philip, Go forward and join
yourself to this chariot. Accordingly Philip, running up to him, heard [the man] reading the prophet Isaiah and asked, Do you really understand what you are reading? And he said, How is it possible for me to do so unless someone explains it to me and guides me [in the right way]? And he earnestly requested Philip to come up and sit beside him. Now this was the passage of Scripture which he was reading:Like a sheep He was led to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so He opens not His mouth. In His humiliation He was taken away by distressing and oppressive judgment and justice was denied Him [caused to cease]. Who can describe or relate in full the wickedness of His contemporaries (generation)? For His life is taken
from the earth and a bloody death inflicted upon Him. And the eunuch said to Philip, I beg of you, tell me about whom does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this portion of Scripture he announced to him the glad tidings (Gospel) of Jesus and about Him. And as they continued along on the way, they came to some water, and the eunuch exclaimed, See, [here is] water! What is to hinder my being baptized? And Philip said, If you believe with all your heart [if you have a
conviction, full of joyful trust, that Jesus is the Messiah and accept Him as the Author of your salvation in the kingdom of God, giving Him your obedience, then] you may. And he replied, I do believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he ordered that the chariot be stopped; and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and [Philip] baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord [suddenly] caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, and he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus, and passing on he preached the good news (Gospel) to all the towns until he reached Caesarea. (Acts 8:26-40 AMP)
What's awesome about these verses is that Philip leaves an incredible ministry. The apostles are seeing thousands saved, healed, and delivered as a result of the message of Jesus being preached everywhere they go. Philip has this visitation from an angel and decides it doesn't matter how great his current situation appears, what matters is that he follows what God tells him to do. Imagine being the pastor of a church where you have thousands of members. Not only do you have thousands of members, but thousands more are being saved, healed, and delivered as a result of your church. One day you have a dream where an angel tells you to begin driving out to the desert. That's it. He doesn't give you a specific location, he doesn't tell you to go start another church, he doesn't tell you to go speak to any specific person, he simply says 'go to the desert'.
I'm pretty sure I'd have to pray long and hard about that one. "You want me to do what now?!"
I'm not saying having a large church or large ministry is wrong, obviously that's not the point. My point is't even about being obedient, although that's something else we can pull from this scripture.
Let me explain what I'm getting out of these verses.
I'm seeing and hearing people crying out in desperation for understanding, knowledge, and revelation of who God really is. I'm seeing Christians who have never been spiritually fathered and are now wondering why they can't seem to go anywhere in life. I'm seeing non-Christians that know there's more to God than the televangelist but they don't have anyone to help them find out what that "more" is. The worst part about these different types of people is that they don't know where to turn to find the help they need. I've been a Christian and in church for years, but until six months ago I didn't have anyone in my life to mentor me. I didn't even know I needed a mentor, I just knew something needed to change in my life and I needed someone to help me.
Spiritual knowledge and revelation were never meant to be hidden within ourselves. Think about the great commission. We are supposed to go out and make disciples of nations, to heal the sick, to cast out the darkness, to share the love of Jesus with everyone we encounter. The great commission was not "get saved, healed, and delivered and then shut up about it."
We are supposed to share what we have learned with everyone else.
What's happening in these verses is Philip has left what appears to be an amazing ministry to walk in the desert. While walking he finds this eunuch and the Holy Spirit tells him "that's him". So Philip catches up to the eunuch and hears him reading Isaiah. The eunuch is desperate for someone to share their knowledge and revelation with him. Philip shares Jesus with the eunuch. The eunuch becomes so excited that he stops and gets baptized right there by Philip.
There are thousands of people all around that are just like this eunuch. People that are craving knowledge, craving an encounter with Jesus. All they need is someone to sit down and share what what they have already learned; someone to explain what the Bible is saying.
You don't have to become a pastor to do this, you don't have to call yourself a "prophet" or "evangelist". You just need to care enough to make a change in someones life. There are plenty of people all around that need your help, they need what you already have. You don't need to be elaborate with them and you don't need to try and "sell" them Christianity. Just be honest, open, and real with them. Walk with them through the bible and be a living expression of the love of Jesus.
I encourage you to sit down with Jesus and ask yourself the following questions.
1.) How can I help the people around me move forward on their journey?
2.) Who can I specifically reach out and help?
3.) What is God trying to show me right now?
I pray the Holy Spirit would speak to your heart and reveal new areas in your community where you can help make a change in someone's life.
